We are very proud to announce that our Dad, Gerry Anderson, will be posthumously awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award at this year’s Northern Ireland Music Prize. Presented by IMRO and supported by the Oh Yeah Music Centre, this award recognises Dad’s lifelong commitment to Northern Irish music, his cherished career in broadcasting, and his unwavering passion for local talent. The ceremony will take place at Belfast’s Ulster Hall on Wednesday, 13th November.

This recognition not only celebrates Dad’s legacy in music but also unlocks £3,000 from IMRO in support of a bursary established in his name. The Gerry Anderson Music Bursary, created earlier this year to mark the tenth anniversary of his passing, has been a deeply meaningful project for our family. Through it, we hope to extend his legacy by supporting musicians who need a helping hand – something he always tried to provide.

Gerry Anderson: A Life Beyond the Microphone

For so many who tuned in daily, Dad was more than a broadcaster. He joined BBC Radio Foyle in 1984, and for the next three decades, he was a comforting and familiar voice in countless homes. Known for his wit, warmth, and fearless approach, he captured hearts across Northern Ireland. Alongside his dear friend Sean Coyle, Dad gave listeners unforgettable moments, sparking the animated TV show On The Air, which immortalised his distinctive humour and charm.

Yet Dad’s identity was rooted in music as much as in broadcasting. His journey began in the early 1960s when he taught himself the guitar and joined local bands. His career took him across cities and continents, playing with the likes of The Chessmen and The Gay McIntyre Showband, and later alongside Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks in Canada. When he returned to Derry, he formed Toejam with friends Colum Arbuckle and Jim Whiteside, and together they played on the Irish Rock circuit for nearly a decade. These experiences stayed with him, influencing his work in radio and sparking his dedication to supporting up-and-coming musicians.

A Legacy of Support for Local Talent

Dad’s life and career were built on his commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists. He had experienced the highs and lows of the music world himself, and his radio shows became a powerful platform for emerging voices. He championed local talent not just because he loved music, but because he understood its struggles and triumphs. Our family is deeply grateful to see this award and the bursary established in his honour. His son, David, shared our sentiments:
