We are excited to announce the launch of a fundraising campaign for the Gerry Anderson Music Bursary, a special initiative designed to support emerging musicians as they embark on their journey in the music industry. This bursary is not just a financial lifeline but a tribute to Gerry Anderson’s enduring legacy in radio, television, and music. By donating, you can play a vital role in nurturing the next generation of musical talent.

Honouring Gerry Anderson’s Legacy

Gerry Anderson was more than just a beloved radio and television personality—he was a passionate advocate for music and a catalyst for the careers of countless aspiring artists. As we mark the 10th anniversary of Gerry’s passing, we have chosen to celebrate his rich legacy by establishing the Gerry Anderson Music Bursary. This bursary aims to give young musicians the resources and support they need to break into the industry and build sustainable careers.

Inspired by Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, who has been vocal about the need for increased arts funding in Northern Ireland, the Anderson family felt compelled to act. In partnership with the Oh Yeah Centre, a renowned institution dedicated to nurturing local talent, and the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland (CFNI), an independent grant-making trust that inspires generosity and drives impact across Northern Ireland, the bursary was born.

Why Your Support Matters

Breaking into the music industry is no easy feat, especially for young and emerging artists. The Gerry Anderson Music Bursary will provide these talented individuals with vital resources such as education, instruments, and opportunities for growth. By donating, you’re not just giving money; you’re investing in the future of music and helping to keep Gerry’s passion for nurturing talent alive.

Dave, Gerry’s son, beautifully captures the spirit behind this initiative:

“My Dad, Gerry, was a musician before his career took off on radio and television. We believe this bursary is a perfect tribute to his legacy. He faced the same challenges as any aspiring musician and dedicated himself to supporting and uplifting the next generation of talent.”

This bursary is a testament to Gerry’s lifelong dedication to music and his belief in its transformative power. It’s a way for all of us to continue his mission and make a tangible difference in the lives of aspiring musicians.

A Community Effort

Gary Lightbody, who not only leads the internationally renowned band Snow Patrol but also founded the Oh Yeah Centre, shares a deep connection with Gerry Anderson:

“When I think about Gerry I think about my Da. The radio was on a lot in our house growing up, and my dad was usually shouting at it, but not Gerry’s show. He would be laughing, as Gerry was not only clearly a very big hearted man but was also really funny. And I loved hearing my dad laugh. So when the name Gerry Anderson is mentioned my mind goes to my dear dad and that is a gift.

“I’m honoured to hear words I said about the arts in NI might have, in some small way, inspired his family to create this bursary to help the next generation of musicians in our wee place. And I am very proud to be associated in any way with the name Gerry Anderson.”

Gary’s words about arts funding sparked the creation of this bursary, and his involvement adds a special significance to the project. The Oh Yeah Centre, will play a partnership role in ensuring that the bursary reaches those who need it most.

Shauna Kelpie, Manager of CFNI’s Acorn Fund, also expressed her enthusiasm:

“The Community Foundation in Derry~Londonderry is delighted to support the Anderson Family to connect Gerry’s legacy locally through new opportunities for talented individuals to make their mark on the entertainment industry.”
